The Kansas City Chiefs came into the playoffs as underdogs, but after beating everyone in their path, including the terrifying Baltimore Ravens, it’s hard to see them in that same light regardless of what the odds might say.
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have lit up the postseason, with the tight end amassing 191 yards and 3 touchdowns over his last two games. Mahomes has willed his offense to success throughout the playoffs, highlighting why he is a level above every other QB in the NFL. Do they have one more explosive game in the locker?
As for the 49ers, this feels like it might finally be their year. They spent the year as perennial NFC favorites and despite a wobbly midseason slump, were able to rebound swiftly under the tutelage of Kyle Shanahan. However, a Lombardi trophy is something that has evaded the Niners since 1994, despite a Super Bowl berth in 2019 and an NFC Championship game appearance in 2022. Fans of the 49ers will be hoping the rise of Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey will be enough to end that long streak without a ring.
On paper, this is a spicy matchup. The Chiefs have the 4th-ranked defense in the NFL while the Niners sit 9th. Against the run, however, KC sits a worrying 17th, which is a terrifying prospect when you remember who’s going to be licking his lips this Sunday…
The difference between Patrick Mahomes and Brock Purdy is subjective, but it’s large. Mahomes has proven himself in big games over and over again, whereas Purdy and the Niners have arguably been lucky to make it to the Super Bowl without blowing it along the way. They’ll need a complete performance against the Chiefs, something that they were unable to put together against Detroit, who choked massively when it mattered most.

In terms of offensive prowess, few can keep pace with San Francisco when they’re firing on all cylinders. Christian McCaffrey could be primed for a real breakout and if the Niners can use CMC to keep Mahomes and company off the field, they have a great shot at winning this game.
Why the Chiefs can win
Kansas City has a habit of sneaking through the backdoor just when all hope seems lost. They’ve beaten the Bills, Dolphins, and Ravens in recent weeks, stringing together unthinkable wins and proving that they have enough mettle to belong in the big game.
While the offense might lack weapons, Travis Kelce still exists and has a borderline unstoppable postseason record. The 49ers might struggle to find answers if their offense stalls out or they’re unable to move the ball through the air.
