Getting swept by the Texas Rangers was not a great way for the Philadelphia Phillies to begin their 2023 campaign. Though less surprising than in Texas, the Phillies’ losing streak continued on Monday night as they lost to the New York Yankees 8-1. Now 0-4, the Phillies will look to put one in the win column for the first time this season.

Phillies vs Yankees Pitching Matchup
Matt Strahm (4-4, 3.83 ERA in 2022) vs. Domingo German (2-5, 3.61 ERA in 2022)
Matt Strahm and Domingo German are both fairly new pitchers to their opposing batters on Tuesday night. In fact, out of both teams, the Yankees’ Aaron Hicks has the most at bats against the opposing pitcher, having gone 0-for-7 thus far versus Strahm. There is a little hope for the Phillies in their matchup against German, but we will get there shortly.
Looking back on Monday’s contest, the Phillies actually out-hit the Yankees 11-9. There were two reasons offensively, however, that it was not enough for the Phils. First, the Phillies were only 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position versus the Yankees’ 4-for-13. They need to start getting more runs across the plate. One such way is reason number two: home runs. The Phillies did not hit a single home run last night in homer-friendly Yankee Stadium. In contrast, the Yankees hit two. A home run is never guaranteed in any game, but the Phillies have a lot of power at their disposal for a team that has only hit one dinger in four games thus far.
This brings us to one potentially favorable matchup for the Phillies: Kyle Schwarber versus German. Schwarber is 1-for-3 with a two-run home run lifetime against German. While the sample size is not great, the Phillies phaithful should easily take the +250 odds for Schwarber to hit a home run tonight. It’s only a matter of time until we get the first regular season Schwarbomb.
If you want a more spicy home run bet for the evening, go with Alec Bohm, who currently owns the Phillies sole knock of the year. Bohm’s +850 odds are looking pretty tasty for a player currently batting a team-leading .467. Two other safe bets from the other dugout would be Aaron Judge (+230) and Giancarlo Stanton (+350). Both sluggers are hot to start the season and will almost certainly both go yard again before the Phillies leave the Bronx.

This Phillies team will almost certainly do great things this year. Until they start showing signs of what they are capable, however, it’s hard to bet for them. With a relatively even pitching matchup in Strahm-German, I’m going with the red-hot Yankees on this one.
