Memorial Tournament: Course preview

Designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus, Muirfield is one of the more challenging courses on tour. It was designed as a tribute to Augusta and it’s very visible in its layout. Water comes into play on 11 of the 18 holes, and quick greens are protected by bunkers and thick rough.

What we’re looking for at The Memorial Tournament

There are two key areas where golfers will need to thrive if they are to be successful this weekend – Approach, and around the green. Driving well off the tee is going to be critical, but the distance isn’t so much. This is very much a second-shot course and players who can get themselves in advantageous positions off the tee will find it much easier hitting these tricky greens.

Memorial Tournament: Odds

Scottie Scheffler+650
John Rahm+750
Patrick Cantlay+1000
Xander Schauffele+1200
Rory McIlroy+1400
Viktor Hovland+2000
Colin Morikawa+2200
Tyrrell Hatton+2500
Jason Day+2750
Justin Thomas+3000

Scottie Scheffler comes in as a favorite here and it’s not hard to see why. He’s come inside the top-5 in each of his last 3 events and will be unstoppable if he can find some consistency with the putter.

Patrick Cantlay is a very intriguing name at +1000. He was actually the same price for this event last year and he finished third. In his last six starts at this event alone, he’s won it twice, came 4th once, and had THREE top-35 finishes. If you do want a chalk play, Cantlay should absolutely be the guy.

Rory Mcilroy at +1400 is the fourth highest-priced golfer this weekend. This is a fair price to play McIlroy. He’s yet to really catch fire this season and has only finished inside the top-25 in 5 of 9 events so far in 2023. He could well be a name worth watching with the U.S Open just around the corner, but form isn’t his friend.

Conversely, Viktor Hovland has been heating up recently. He came inside the top-20 last week, following up his impressive PGA Championship effort with another strong result. He’s among the purest ball-strikers in the field and is always a threat to make a run.

Deep value plays at The Memorial Tournament

Ryan Fox is a name that’s popping this week. He’s had 3 top-30 finishes in a row and ranks 9th in strokes-gained total over his last 9 events. He’s been very well-rounded with some prowess around the greens and at +13000 he could provide some value for top-5 or top-10 wagers.

I also feel like Rickie Fowler is going to get his big break soon. His form this year has been such a pleasing step forward and it feels like it’s only a matter of time until he puts four consecutive rounds together to win a tournament once again. He’s +3500 going into the Memorial Tournament but is gaining 0.72 shots on approach over his last 9 events.

As far as someone who ticks every box for success at The Memorial Tournament this weekend, look no further than Gary Woodland. He’s gaining close to 0.7 strokes both off the tee and on approach and has been consistently in with a shout on Sunday’s over the past few months. He comes into this weekend a +10000 so is worth a punt.
