If only there was a rematch between the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers on the books in 2023. The schedule-makers would have loved the opportunity to flex that one.

Especially after scathing comments from 49ers star Deebo Samuel started making the rounds on May 4th. He didn’t hold back on his hatred for the Eagles’ fan base and the players in the Philly locker room stemming from San Francisco’s loss in the NFC Championship Game. According to Samuel, the trash talk has been non-stop and he’s tired of it. It has angered him so much that the Eagles have now taken the crown of his “most hated team” away from the Los Angeles Rams.

“[My] most hated team is the Eagles right now. 100 percent,” Samuel said.

Wow. Fighting words. Samuel was speaking on a variety of topics during an interview with Complex Sports when the topic of losing the NFC Championship Game came up. He doubled down on teammate Brandon Aiyuk’s claim that if the 49ers had been healthy — they lost starting quarterback Brock Purdy to an elbow injury in the first quarter, then backup Josh Johnson picked up a concussion — they would have won.

“I ain’t going to keep going on about what could’ve happened and what would’ve happened but yeah, it would’ve definitely been a different outcome,” Samuel said. “We lost because we played with 10 people.”

Refresher: Brandon Aiyuk Thought Eagles Got ‘Extremely Lucky’

Brandon Aiyuk was the first to pound his chest about the 49ers getting robbed in the NFC Championship Game with some unprovoked words back in early February. He was asked for a Super Bowl prediction and used the opportunity to bash the Eagles. He was betting the house on the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I don’t know fully about that defense,” Aiyuk said, via Clutch Points. “They talk about them being a good defense … I’m not sure. I think this Kansas City pass game will expose what we thought we were going to expose before some unfortunate circumstances. They got extremely lucky.”

Then, Aiyuk took the opportunity to remind everyone who the real best team in football was in 2022.

“We have, hands down, the best football team in the league. Hands down,” Aiyuk said, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “I’m not going even going to argue with anyone who thinks they should argue that.”

Jonathan Gannon Probably Didn’t Help Anything

The viral video of Jonathan Gannon sitting in stadium traffic and telling an Eagles fan: “We’re gonna f***ing gut these guys” a few hours prior to the NFC Championship Game probably didn’t sit well with 49ers players either. Gannon later admitted to adrenaline getting the best of him that day. He was pumped up, caught in the moment, and didn’t realize people were videotaping him so the former defensive coordinator shared a special message.

“There was a theme that we had all week so I rolled down the window and I kind of said the theme,” Gannon said, via Philly Voice. “So I love our fans. I had no idea I was getting videotaped, obviously, but love our fans and the passion that they have.”

It’s really funny to re-read Gannon’s quotes today. He has gone from conquering hero to one of the most hated villains in Philly sports history, all in a matter of three months.
