On Monday, reports came out that former Saint Joseph’s Head Coach Phil Martelli has accepted a position as Assistant Coach at University of Michigan under new Head Coach Juwan Howard

The University of Michigan is getting a good coach to be an assistant coach for a 1st-time head coach Juwan Howard. During his 24 years as Head coach at Saint Joseph’s, Martelli leads the Hawks to the NCAA Tournament 7 times, 6 trips to the NIT Tournament, 444 coaching wins. 3 Atlantic 10 Conference championships. Martelli was the 2004 AP & Naismith Coach of the Year Coach of the Year. Martelli was named Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the year 4 times.
Martelli lead the Saint Joseph’s Hawks to the Elite 8 in 2004 where they fell to Oklahoma State, that team was led by Delonte West, Jameer Nelson, Pat Caroll, Tyrone Barley
Phil Martelli final season with the Hawks, the team went 14–19 (6–12 A-10) and lost to Davidson in the Quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at Barclays Center.
