Union draw D.C. United in round of 16 for U.S Open Cup

The Philadelphia Union’s run to U.S Open Cup glory continues as the hosts of PPL Park will once again play at home. This time however, against a much tougher opponent.

The draw for the next round of the U.S Open Cup was conducted on Thursday at U.S. Soccer Federation headquarters, and saw the travelling United paired with the Philadelphia Union for their round of 16 showdown at the end of the month. If the Union can pull off even more heroics, they will earn a visit to the winner of the other East regional game, between the New York Red Bulls and second-division New York Cosmos.

The Red Bulls will host the underdog Cosmos, who defeated the second team in New York on penalties this previous wednesday..so they are not to be underestimated.

All eyes will be on Philly as their success in the competition in recent years looks set to continue. Having only been in the cup for five years, the Union have made the final once and the semifinal once. Is history going to repeat itself? There’s only one way to find out..but a win over D.C United could well kickstart something special at PPL Park.
