The NFL awarded teams compensatory draft picks today ahead of the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. The Philadelphia Eagles were expected to be big beneficiaries of this and they were. The team has been given an extra four selections to add to its war chest.

What is an NFL Compensatory Draft pick?

A compensatory pick is given to a team who has lost a valuable player prior to the previous season. It’s a way for the NFL to promote parity and give teams an extra hand in sustaining success rather than struggling to replace elite-level talents. The picks range from rounds 3-7 and have become a crucial part of team-building for Howie Roseman during his tenure.

The esteemed GM is known for his cheeky contract tactics and cap-management. Oftentimes, Howie Roseman will happily let a player walk if he can replace him in the short-term and capitalize on a compensatory pick.

Javon Hargrave is the best example of this, who was allowed to walk into free agency last season and in turn, has now netted the Eagles a 3rd round pick for the upcoming NFL Draft.

The Eagles gained a 3rd round pick, a pair of 5th-rounders, and a 6th due to the compensatory pick process.

If you need more understanding of how important this process is, look at the Eagles’ draft picks for 2024 below. Only one of their draft picks is a ‘native’ draft pick, while every other selection has been acquired through a trade or as compensation for a player leaving. This means Roseman can leverage assets in trades, knowing that he’ll be reimbursed with compensatory picks down the line when he lets players leave.
