49ers vs Lions: NFC Championship Betting preview
The Detroit Lions have won two playoff games in a row and are very much the darlings of the postseason. Despite coming into the playoffs as huge underdogs, they now have a legitimate shot at NFC Championship gold and will not be intimidated by a 49ers team that looked vulnerable against the Green Bay Packers.
Jared Goff has gone interception-free in 11 games this season, including each of the 3 last matchups. The quarterback is clearly comfortable in Dan Campbell’s offense and with a focus on protecting the ball, he’ll make it hard for a dominant Niners defense to have their way with him.
On paper, the 49ers have the best defense in the NFC and it’s hard to match their levels of offensive production. However, what the Packers did was give Detroit a blueprint to slow things down and put some pressure on Brock Purdy, who completed 59% of passes in their narrow win over Green Bay. The Niners aren’t unstoppable.
Why the 49ers can win
Simply put, they can put up points better than most offenses in this league and the Lions lack the defensive prowess to stop them. Detroit sits 31st against the pass, but they are much stronger against the run, sitting 2nd. That is a terrifying prospect when you remember that although McCaffrey had 1,459 rushing yards this year alone, suffocating him only puts more pressure on the Lions’ biggest weakness, which is set to be exploited by a creative offense and some lethal receivers.
Why the Lions can win
One word, momentum. While I don’t see the Lions winning this game outright, they have shown enough fight over the last few weeks to at least hang with San Francisco and stay within two scores.
It’s a tall order, but the Lions have the offense needed to dictate tempo and play keepaway. They cannot let the Niners glide their way down the field and if they can find a way to limit their time of possession, then there’s a chance they can pull off the upset.

I am a fan of what the Lions are building. However, the Niners have vengeance on their mind and have been here before. They have the more complete roster and a coach weathered in postseason storms. As much as the Lions will make it competitive, I think the 49ers pull this off.
