The 49ers are well-rested after enjoying a first-round bye, courtesy of an impressive 12-win season that saw them roll through the majority of their opponents, with a few minor stumbles along the way. They’ll play host to a Packers team high on both confidence and adrenaline after smacking the taste out of the Cowboys last weekend.
Dallas hadn’t lost at home in 16 consecutive games. That changed when Jordan Love tore through the defense, completing 76% of his passes for 272 yards and 3 touchdowns. He’ll face a much tougher challenge against a defense that ranks 8th overall in the last 3 weeks. The Cowboys looked shocked and were left lifeless on their own turf. The Niners offense is simply way too explosive to fall silent should the defense succumb to Green Bay.
San Francisco boast the leagues’ best offense, averaging 398 yards per game. They rank 3rd in rushing thanks to another sizzling season from Christian McCaffrey, while Brock Purdy’s rise into a reliable arm has spurred San Fran to the 4th-ranked passing offense. Green Bay’s defense ranks a measly 23rd in comparison, and that is bound to cause problems. Is there any way they can slow down the Niners?
Why the 49ers can win
Simply put, they can rack up points better than most offenses in this league and the Packers just lack the defensive prowess to stop them. Green Bay sits 14th against the pass, but a worrying 28th against the run. That is a terrifying prospect when you remember that McCaffrey has 1,459 rushing yards this year alone. That obviously led the league. The man in second, Derrick Henry was behind by 292 yards…
Are the Packers built to stop a run-game as diverse as this and an offense where receivers can win matchups out of the backfield, and running backs and make huge plays in open space? That’s an awful lot of scoring pressure on a young offense…
Why the Packers can cover
One word, momentum. While I don’t see the Packers winning this game outright, they have shown enough fight over the last few weeks to at least hang with San Francisco and stay within two scores.
The way to beat this team is similar to how Green Bay beat Dallas. Start aggressive, score early, and make Brock Purdy work for it. He’s only human and is far from immune when it comes to putting the ball in vulnerable spots.
It’s a tall order, but if the Packers can get out to a 7-10 point lead and force Purdy to throw, it not only takes away the run (where they notoriously struggle), but forces Purdy to try and push the ball down the field, giving the Packers better chances of turnovers to further control possession.

Life after Aaron Rodgers was never going to be an easy transition, but the youth infusion is happening, and Green Bay is officially the NFL’s youngest team. That lack of postseason experience will be the difference on the road against a lethal Niners offense that is strong where the Packers are weak.
