North Carolina State vs UConn +14.5

Jim Mora’s first year at UConn was a resounding success and there’s every chance they build on that this year. Nearly a third of last year’s starters are returning and NC State is fielding a new quarterback and secondary, which could make them vulnerable.

These two teams clashed in 2022 which resulted in North Carolina State steamrolling them to the tune of 41-10. Now they’re on the road and UConn will want revenge.

New NC State QB, Brennan Armstrong, had an explosive 2021 season, but he’s thrown 10+ picks in each of his last 3 seasons. NC State also struggled to put up points last year, only averaging 339 yards per game and 24.3 points per matchup. They should improve, but I think the familiarity of UConn’s team will give them an edge, especially at home.

Nebraska +7 @ Minnesota

Matt Rhule’s coaching prowess is going to be spotlighted here and for good reason. While his Carolina Panthers tenure ended in tears, he is a proven commodity at the College level. He’s a legend in Temple for a reason and Nebraska fans are going to be excited to see what he can do to their school’s reputation.

That starts with upsetting Minnesota. QB Jeff Sims transferred from Georgia Tech and is expected to make a huge impact, especially if he can reduce his turnovers. That should at least negate some of the dominance Minnesota is expected to field defensively.

Minnesota is 97-36-6 in season openers and they should win the game outright. However, I expect Nebraska to keep things close and stay well within this number. If it moves to +7.5, I’m all-in.

Kent State vs UCF -30.5

There’s a huge parity in talent levels here. UCF is bringing back QB John Rhys Plumlee to lead the charge against a defense that gave up 29 points per game last year. He also ranked 34th in QBR and was someone that didn’t turn the ball over much. That’s bad news for a Kent State defense that ranked 90th and struggled to generate turnovers.

The Knights ranked 16th in total offense last year as well as fielding a stacked defense. This should be a cakewalk for their home-opener.

Florida at Utah -6.5

With Cam Rising’s status still uncertain after a torn ACL, the game-line has now dropped under a score. If he starts, there’s some serious value. If he doesn’t, it’s not like Kyle Wittingham is a slouch.

The Gators are expected to take a step forward this year, but Graham Mertz had 10 picks last year along with a lowly 57% completion rate. I’m not sure, regardless of which QB is facing him, if Mertz has it in the locker to win outright against Utah’s dominant defense.

Utah lost to Florida last year and will love a shot at revenge this weekend in front of their rampant home fans.
