Georgia is currently favored to win the SEC in 2023
Nick Saban’s Alabama sits second in the odds list at +300. This is one of the very few times you can get the Crimson Tide at a higher price. Their elite receiving run finally came to an end last year, with Bryce Young relying on RB Jahmyr Gibbs to do most of the damage once the heavy hitters had been drafted in the NFL. However, their secondary is arguably the best in the nation and despite questions at quarterback, it’s unlikely that Bama wobbles as much as it did in 2022. It’s also worth noting that Bama has been to the SEC Championship game in 6 of the last 9 seasons. They’ll very much be in the hunt and +300 could provide bettors with some great value.
The third team on the odds list is LSU. After losing to Georgia in the Championship game last year, they will be looking for revenge with Heisman candidate Jayden Daniels at QB, a 1,000-yard receiver in Malik Nabers, and a dominant offensive front. While the Tigers might struggle against some of the ranked teams they’ll face this year, they have enough talent offensively to hang and could force their way into the conversation by the end of the season.
Is it time to back an SEC underdog?
Below the top two teams are a myriad of teams that could be deemed as longshots to bettors. Texas A&M might be the most appealing in that crowd. Fresh off a 5-7 season where they lost 6 in a row, the Aggies are still ranked #23 coming into 2023. They dealt with a lot of roster turnover and injuries last year and should be able to build a solid base this season. They might not win it all, but they could at least make some noise late in proceedings and their odds are still strong enough to suggest that.
How about Auburn? With a new Head Coach at the helm following a disappointing campaign, it will be interesting to see if QB Robby Ashford can take a step forward under new leadership. They’re some way off competing for a national title, but should be able to get back to their Bowl-winning ways this season.
