The Philadelphia Phillies played two games against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday, winning the first and dropping the follow-up. The teams will clash for a third time on Wednesday before the series comes to a close tomorrow. Can the home team get back on track before the series comes to a close?

Pitching matchup

Michael Lorenzen (6-7, 3.48 ERA) vs MacKenzie Gore (6-8, 4.34 ERA)

Michael Lorenzen will be making his second start for the Phillies on Wednesday on the back of a win over the Marlins where he went 8 innings and allowed only 2 runs. Prior to the trade, his ERA through the month of July was a stunning 1.14. He also allowed just 13 hits through 23 innings. Lorenzen has struck out 5+ batters in 3 of his last 5 starts, which could give us some upside against a streaky Nats offense.

The Nationals will be sending out MacKenzie Gore to combat Lorenzen. The lefty went 6 innings in his most recent start, giving up just 2 runs in 6 innings to the Brewers. The month of July was an interesting one for Gore, who had two shutouts to his name and a pair of games where he allowed 5+ runs. This could spell trouble against a Phillies offense who have rattled the Nats for 12 runs during the two games they’ve played this week.

Phillies vs Nationals Betting preview

Since the 2022 season, the Nationals are 6-21 against the Phillies. They are 46-61 as an underdog this year. I can’t see a scenario where the Nats steal a second win in this series, especially if Lorenzen can keep up his hot form. I’ll happily back the Phillies to win this.

If it’s a prop bet you’re looking for, I do like betting UNDER 9 runs. Lorenzen might have been red-hot recently, but both teams have been able to shine offensively in this series. This has led to an inflated total. Runs have come easy for the Nats and Phils this series, but both pitchers have the ability to go deep into games and that should keep a lid on things here.

The Phillies and their passionate fans also appear to have resurrected Trea Turner, who is now riding a 5-game hit streak. He’s -280 to record a hit today, and +330 to hit a home run. This could be an avenue worth exploring if you’re building a same-game parlay.
