The Philadelphia 76ers added another voice to Nick Nurse’s coaching staff Wednesday evening. After adding veteran NBA minds Rico Hines and Bobby Jackson, the Sixers have brought on longtime assistant Bryan Gates, according to NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

Gates initially had agreed to join Jason Kidd’s staff with the Dallas Mavericks but was allowed to pursue this opportunity due to a reported significant step up in role. What exactly that role is remains to be seen, but it seems clear that Nick Nurse and the 76ers have significant plans for Gates.

During his 13 years as an assistant coach in the NBA, Gates has spent time with the Suns, Pelicans, and two tours with both the Kings and Timberwolves. Like Nurse, Gates also has years of experience under his belt coaching in the G League, although then it was still the Developmental League or D League, and was twice named the Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2008.
