The opening day of NBA Free Agency began quietly for the Philadelphia 76ers, but the team managed to generate some excitement with the addition of power forward Trendon Watford on a two-year, $5.3 million deal. ESPN’s Shams Charania was the first to report.

Who is Trendon Watford?

Undrafted in 2021 despite two solid seasons at LSU, Watford debuted in the league with the Portland Trail Blazers, with whom he spent the first two seasons of his career before signing with the Brooklyn Nets, where he’s spent the previous two years.

Last season, Watford averaged 10.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists for the Brooklyn Nets. While Watford may not be a star, and nothing on his box score may not pop out on first look, he is the type of player every team wants, and that many need to win.

Nothing about his stats will blow you away, but he’s capable in nearly every aspect of the game. A solid, versatile defender, a willing shooter, a strong passer for his position, and above all else, an unceasing competitor, fitting in perfectly with the likes of Jared McCain, VJ Edgecombe, and Tyrese Maxey.

Speaking of Maxey, the two are good friends. Especially over the last two seasons, it wasn’t uncommon to see the two interact in between plays when the Sixers and Nets faced off, often with Watford teasing Maxey in a friendly manner, as seems to be their relationship off the court as well.

Watford will have plenty of opportunity for minutes as the Sixers currently roster only one other power forward, second-round rookie Johni Broome. The return of Guerschon Yabusele remains a possibility, but early reports have indicated that Yabu may be destined for another home.
