The Philadelphia Phillies were able to off to a good start against the Chicago Cubs, winning the opening game 5-1 thanks to some great pitching by Ranger Suarez and a Brandon Marsh breakout. They’ll be looking for win number 42 on the season later this evening.

Pitching matchup

Aaron Nola (6-5, 4.38 ERA) vs Drew Smyly (7-4, 3.38 ERA)

Fans attending tonight’s game will be in for a quality pitching matchup. Aaron Nola has been much better in the month of June, allowing just 14 hits and 13 runs in 20 innings. However, the main criticism remains his tendency to allow home runs. Although he finally broke the streak in his most recent start, Nola had allowed at least 1 home run in his last 11 outings, and that’s something the Cubs, who average 1.08 home runs per home game this season, will look to capitalize on.

Across from Nola will be Drew Smyly. He’s been as consistent as they come this season and has pitched at least 5 innings per start in the month of June. However, he’s allowed 7+ hits in 4 of his last 5 games, potentially giving the Phillies some offensive advantages coming into tonight’s game.

Phillies vs Cubs Betting preview

There’s a really strong case to be made for betting the ‘OVER’ here. The total is only ‘8’ and with Nola’s constant battle against home runs matching up well with Drew Smyly’s recent struggles controlling damage, this could very easily spill into a 10+ run game. You can back 10+ runs at around +195.

The Phillies have the 10th best batting percentage in the MLB and the Cubs rank similarly. There’s no reason these offenses should struggle against big names who are prone to giving up big plays.

If you’re looking for props to bet on, look no further than Bryce Harper. While Harper has been quiet recently, and that includes last night, he’s been a pain in the backside for the Cubs. When playing at Wrigley Field, Harper has bat .350, accounted for 35 hits, and scored 4 home runs in just 28 games. You can get Harper to hit a home run at +320, or a hit at -270.
