The Philadelphia Phillies were able to get past the New York Mets over the weekend and now travel to Chicago for a series against the Cubs. Both teams have bounced back well over the past month, so something will have to give when they collide at Wrigley Field.

Pitching matchup

Ranger Suarez (1-2, 3.50 ERA) vs Jameson Tailon (probable) (2-5, 6.54 ERA)

Ranger is very much leading the resurgence in Philadelphia. His last outing against the Braves saw him give up just 1 run and 4 hits across 6 innings. His ERA in the month of June is just 1.04, giving up 3 runs in 26 innings worth of play. He’s as hot as they come right now and the Cubs will have a hard time unseating Suarez.

We don’t know that Tailon will be the definite starter here, but if he is, it’s bad news for Chicago. He’s allowing close to 5 runs per game in the month of June and has allowed 22 hits in the last 4 games, an average of one per inning pitched. He has the ability to strikeout a lot of batters, but it’s been sporadic this season. It’s also worth noting that the Phillies lit him up during their last matchup.

Phillies vs Cubs Betting preview

The pitching matchup is likely what’s going to separate these teams today. A red-hot Ranger Suarez is bad news for a middling Cubs offense. However, they have scored 5+ runs in 5 of their last 8 games, so the bullpen has to be wary.

The Phillies have the 10th best batting percentage in the MLB and should be able to handle a pitcher who has surrendered an abundance of runs over his most recent starts. I’m comfortable backing the Phillies here.

If you’re looking for props to bet on, look no further than Bryce Harper. While Harper has been quiet recently, he’s been a pain in the backside for the Cubs. When playing at Wrigley Field, Harper has bat .350, accounted for 35 hits, and scored 4 home runs in just 28 games. You can get Harper to hit a home run at +320, or a hit at -270.
