After being passed up for the Eagles’ defensive coordinator position, Dennard Wilson seems to be looking for other ways to run his own defense.

According to Ian Rappaport of NFL Network, the Eagles and the defensive backs coach are mutually parting ways. Rappaport later explained that this is often the outcome when an in-house candidate is passed over for a promotion.

Wilson received positive acclaim for his role with the Eagles over the past few seasons. The secondary, backed by newcomers, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and James Bradberry, ranked first in the entire league against the pass and second overall.

Slay and CJGJ both campaigned officially for Wilson to receive the promotion to defensive coordinator following Jonathan Gannon leaving for Arizona. Instead, the Eagles brought in former Bears’ defensive coordinator, Sean Desai for the role.

Wilson will have plenty of suitors as he looks for places to run his own defense. Outside of Philly, the former Jets’ assistant had been a finalist for the Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator role before Jim Schwartz was hired.

Philadelphia now has two open coaching roles at both the secondary and linebacking core.
