On the first day of ‘Camp Tortorella,’ no pucks were included. Just ice, skates, and time.

John Tortorella began the 2022 Flyers Training Camp with an exclusive skating session for each group. He stuck to his guns, mentally and physically challenging his roster. Tortorella explained:

“It doesn’t matter what you look like as long as you get through the skate.”

Tortorella went over to Nicolas Deslauriers, who he described as ugly in terms of his skate test, to tell him that he hoped the rest of the team saw his effort.

“I’m not a fast skater, I know that. I have to work on it; I’ve been working on it. It was a good skating test. Got some text message with a quote that he said; that it was ugly. I talk to Torts a lot on the phone, and he told me it’s going to be hard. I have no quit in my game; might be ugly, might be nice, but that’s how I work.”

A day before their first preseason game, the Philadelphia Flyers will jump into skate sessions with pucks on the ice. There will be two scrimmages on the Flyers and Lehigh Valley Phantoms rinks at the Flyers Training Center. A work in progress, Tortorella is still learning about his roster. These are today’s takeaways from the second day of the 2022 Flyers Training Camp:

Team Scrimmages

Team 1 vs Team 4

Carter Hart (Team 4) had a rough go at it, falling to Samuel Ersson (Team 1) by a score of 6-0. The talent was relatively stacked at one side if you compare the rosters. Hart faced a heavy volume of shots while Ersson didn’t reach double digits.

Travis Konecny scored in eleven seconds. Max Willman kept his hustle, winning a race to the puck and scoring on Hart. Olle Lycksell scored twice; he’s been on fire since the 2022 Flyers Rookie Series. Hayden Hodgson kept pounding away with hits, playing physically.

Team 2 vs Team 3

Another shutout victory followed in the second scrimmage. Samuel Morin was watching from the top.

Deslauriers was physical during his scrimmage, leaving his mark on Cam York into the boards. York didn’t lose his poise, making the right passes to clear the defensive zone. Ronnie Attard provided stability, a credit to his time watching film with Mike O’Connell, by making crisp passes to pressure the transition into the offensive zone. The scrimmage even featured a goal from Antoine Roussel following a turnover by Travis Sanheim.

Joel Farabee continued to skate, not participating in any contact elements of the 2022 Flyers Training Camp. He did test himself against Rasmus Ristolainen, however.

John Tortorella

Before Philadelphia takes on the Boston Bruins, Tortorella made it clear that the Phantoms staff will coach the first two preseason games. He isn’t making any judgments from today’s scrimmages for his lineup.

“I want to see them play against guys they didn’t just have breakfast with.”

John Tortorella; 9/23/2022

Chuck Fletcher is putting together the rosters for the first three games. “He’s got to put pieces together,” Tortorella added. For the final two preseason games, Tortorella will be at the bench. In both those games, the Flyers will battle the New York Islanders.

Up Next

Next up for the Philadelphia Flyers is their first preseason tilt. They’ll welcome the Boston Bruins to the Wells Fargo Center for a 7pm puck drop.
