In less than a week, the Phillies would have had two of their outfielders participating in the All-Star game in Los Angeles. Both Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber earned their spots as the starting National League DH and reserve outfielder, respectively.
Now, Phillies All-Star outfielder Kyle Schwarber is going to be having some fun a day earlier. The slugger has earned a spot in the home run derby as well. He announced this on his Instagram this afternoon, which was later confirmed by Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.
Not a first for Kyle Schwarber
On the season, the lefty leadoff bat has hit 28 homers, which leads the National League. He only sits behind Aaron Judge (30) for most in the entire league. 12 of these came in the month of June alone. These numbers have led to his invite to his second career derby; his other being his loss to now teammate Bryce Harper in 2018.
Other participants confirmed are Ronald Acuna Jr., Albert Pujols, reigning champion Pete Alonso, and Juan Soto. You have to imagine that Schwarber will sit toward the top of the Vegas betting odds heading into this year’s contest. The Home Run Derby will take place inside Dodger Stadium on July 18 at 8 p.m. ET.
