In a year where there haven’t been many things to celebrate, one appeared on Saturday afternoon. Eagles DE Vinny Curry took to Instagram to announce a very impressive achievement.
Defensive end Vinny Curry graduated from Marshall University with his Master’s degree in Leadership Studies
To put this achievement in perspective, Vinny Curry is from Neptune City, New Jersey. Neptune City has a crime rate that is higher than 94% of the state. In 2017, the most recent available data, the graduation rate in New Jersey was 90.5%. The graduation rate for Neptune High School in 2020 was 81%, which is an IMPROVEMENT over five years.
Curry graduating with his Master’s is something he could’ve never dreamed of, as you saw in his Instagram post. Coming from where Curry came from, one does not expect to see this kind of success.
From establishing football camps, to gifting hair cuts to high school seniors for prom, Curry never forgot where he came from.
The Eagles defensive end almost quit football after the death of his half-brother, and Athletic Director/Principal of Eastside High School in Paterson, NJ, Dr. Gerald Glisson in May. Glisson passed due to complications of COVID-19:
The passing of my brother has been really, really hard on me. I just thought I would take my time with it. I didn’t even think about the game honestly.
Curry continues to honor the legacy of his brother through his play on the field and his work off the field.
The 33-year-old played in all 16 games last season, notching five sacks and 27 tackles. His five sacks were his most since his nine sack season in 2014. Four of those five sacks came in the team’s last five games, with two coming against the Giants in their first matchup. This season, Curry has 8 tackles and 2 sacks through 7 games after re-signing with the team in a rotational role.
Congratulations on your outstanding achievement, Vinny.
