After Sundays disappointing performance, the scrappy keeping and terrible errors may have been one step too far for Jim Curtin as he announced on Wednesday that the Algerian International goalie would be departing the team, to be replaced by rookie John McCarthy with immediate effect.
Mbolhi has started all five matches for the Union this season and has remained winless. His performance on Sunday just wasn’t good enough but maybe not bad enough to fire him. However, his season stats tell a different story. Mbolhi has allowed nine goals in just 20 shots.. the most in MLS. He has a save rate of 50% which ranks him 23rd out of 25 goalies in the MLS. For a team that realistically should be aiming for the playoffs, that kind of record is unacceptable. But bringing in a rookie may not be the perfect solution. However, Curtin didn’t deny that the Union would attempt a transfer of a more renowned keeper.
Voted USL Pro Rookie of the Year last season, rookie John McCarthy will get his first ever MLS start this weekend against David Villa and New York City FC…talk about being thrown in at the deep end!
