Sepp Straka won the 2025 Truist Championship by two strokes over Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, and the rest of the field on Championship Sunday at Philadelphia Cricket Club (Wissahickon). Straka turned in his scorecard with a 2-under par (68) to claim his second PGA TOUR win this season.

Sepp Straka surges to 2024 Truist Championship win

After finishing Day 2 two shots behind on the leaderboard, Straka posted a 4-under and total score of 66 to vault himself into a first-place tie at 14-under for the Truist Championship on Day 3. He followed that up with another solid outing when the stakes were even higher.

Straka joins FedEx Cup Standings leader, Rory McIlroy, as the only two-time tournament winner in 2025, nearing the two-thirds mark on the PGA TOUR calendar. With the 700 FedExCup points from the win, Straka vaulted up two spots from fourth place to second position behind McIlroy in the FedExCup Standings. “It’s huge, the biggest win of my career,” Straka said after his round. “Yeah, just so grateful for the process and the whole team that kind of makes me play as well as I do.”

Day 4 recap

The end of Lowry’s day in the final group was difficult to watch. The Irish golfer scored a bogey on the final two holes of his round, including a three-putt on the final hole that essentially sealed Straka’s win. The pair had been within one shot of each other’s scores all afternoon until the final green on 18. The 38-year-old was visibly frustrated with the finish of his round as the fans started toward the exits after an exciting final round of competition.

Justin Thomas finished Sunday with a 3-under 67 to end in a second-place tie with Lowry when the final scoreboard updated. It is Thomas’s 10th career runner-up finish on the PGA TOUR, and his third second-place finish this season. “It was a lot of fun,” Thomas said on the vibe in Philly this weekend. “The fans were obviously very into it. It was cool. I wish we played more tournaments up here. The golf courses are great. You get an energy in the crowd and just feels – you know, you have a lot of buzz.”

Thomas is excited to return to Philadelphia for the 2026 PGA Championship next season. “It will be great,” Thomas stated. “Even as locals here know, being a week later, I think it will be even better for the golf course. The crowd will be nuts. They’ll be very loud and boisterous, and maybe I can do something else between now and then so people can stop yelling cheesesteak at me.” The two-time PGA TOUR Player of the Year (2017, 2020) went viral earlier this week for a clubhouse photo while devouring Philadelphia’s delicious specialty, a cheesesteak from Angelo’s Pizzeria.

The cheese-stuffed steak sandwich left legendary sports broadcaster Jim Nantz speechless, a man world-renowned for his descriptive language. “This,” Nantz stammered as he searched his brain for words in a short Instagram video from CBS Sports‘ Amanda Balionis. “I make my living with my words… There are no words.”

Free advertising for Angelo’s in South Philly aside, the city’s sports fans impressed the world’s best golfers this week. “They’re very enthusiastic,” McIlroy said. “They’re loud. They’re relentless… I must have heard my name a million times this week. It’s been amazing. There’s so many kids out here as well, which is wonderful. I’m looking forward to coming up and playing here a little more often in the next few years.”

The PGA returns to Pennsylvania for the 2025 U.S. Open, which will be held at the Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh, PA, next month. Philly-based golf fans must wait until next spring when the PGA TOUR takes over the Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square for the 2026 PGA Championship from May 11-17, 2026.
