It’s not often that a Super Bowl-winning team can retain all their free agents, or the majority of them, for that matter. This proved true for the Super Bowl LIX champion Philadelphia Eagles, who have lost edge rusher Josh Sweat, defensive tackle Milton Williams, and now, offensive lineman Mekhi Becton.

According to ESPN reporter Tim McManus, Becton has agreed to a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers after continued speculation of his return to Philadelphia, even after the team acquired Kenyon Green. Per McManus, Becton expects to play guard for the Chargers, just as he did for the Eagles.

Becton signed with the Eagles shortly after the draft last offseason. For Becton, it was an opportunity to rehab his value and learn under the greatest offensive line coach the NFL offers. For the Eagles, it was a low-risk, high-reward play that paid off far better than anyone could have predicted.

The former 11th overall pick would become the Eagles’ starting right guard, a major change from his days as a left tackle. Despite this change, Becton proved ready for the challenge, thriving in his new role, starting in 19 games for the Eagles between the regular and postseason.

Without Becton, the Eagles will likely turn toward former third-round pick Tyler Steen, with Kenyon Green as a potential alternative. Steen has, at times, performed unevenly. He was a relatively poor grade by PFF, ranking 130th out of 135 guards in the NFL, but allowed zero sacks last season in 315 offensive snaps. Perhaps a sign of hope moving forward.

For now, to Mekhi Becton, so long, farewell, and thanks for the memories.
