After another round of consultation with top specialists, the Philadelphia 76ers have determined to shut down Joel Embiid for the final 24 games of the NBA season.
Embiid has played just 19 games this season due to a lingering knee condition, a sprained foot, and a sinus fracture. The Sixers formally made the announcement on Friday, Feb. 28.

“The Philadelphia 76ers and Joel Embiid have been consulting with top specialists regarding ongoing issues with his left knee,” the organization said in a medical update. “After further evaluation, it has been determined that he is medically unable to play and will miss the remainder of the season to focus on treatment and rehabilitation.”
The organization also said they are continuing to work with medical experts to determine the exact treatment plan and will provide an update when able. According to the Sixers, “The team and specialists will continue working with Joel to ensure the best path forward for his long-term health and performance.”
