The Philadelphia Flyers endured an ugly 5-0 loss to the New Jersey Devils as the two teams met for the third time within the month and the second time in a few days. Philly was coming off a 4-2 win over the Devils on Monday.
The Flyers announced before the game that Sam Ersson has been added to Team Sweden’s roster ahead of the 2025 Four Nations Faceoff. Ersson is taking the place of Jacob Markstrom. Ersson did get the start on the net but disappointingly didn’t finish the full 60 minutes.
With neither team scoring early on, the Flyers had to go on the penalty kill as Morgan Frost had to serve a two-minute minor for hooking Jesper Bratt. The majority of penalty kills carried over to the second frame, and the Devils, who did exceptionally well on the power play, were able to score. Ondrej Palat was the goal scorer for the Devils, only 54 seconds into the second frame.
Owen Tippett took a massive hit from Brendan Dillion and left the game and didn’t return. There is no update on the injury or if he will play against the Islanders on Thursday night. Tortorella was fuming that Dillion didn’t get an interference penalty.

Five minutes later, Luke Hughes could score on a 2-on-1. Ironically, his brother Jack was the other skater on the odd-man rush for New Jersey, but Luke held onto the puck and took the shot on goal himself. Minutes later, both teams got heated. As for Philadelphia, Nick Seeler, Jamie Drysdale, and Garnet Hathaway all had roughing penalties. The frustration from Philadelphia was evident.
Minutes later, Sean Couturier had a hooking penalty, leading the Devils to return on their potent power play. This time, Nathan Bastian scored on the extra man advantage. The Devils now lead 3-0, but the scoring wasn’t done yet in the middle frame. A minute later, Dawson Mercer scored, and with the Devils leading 4-0, Sam Ersson was pulled.
Ivan Fedotov replaced Ersson with six minutes left of the second frame. The Flyers survived the remainder of the middle frame as the start of the third frame didn’t go their way. Jack Hughes scored a goal of his own, making the Devils’ lead 5-0 nearly two minutes into the third period. After Hughes’ goal, the Flyers could hold the Devils to just five goals for the final 18 minutes. This was a team that was outplayed in every aspect. There wasn’t much good that came from this game.
The Flyers will NOT have a morning skate on Thursday morning as they head home to prepare to host the New York Islanders. The puck drops at 7:30.
