Buccaneers vs Chiefs: NFL Week 9 Betting preview

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to defy expectations. Despite some near-misses, they’re a whopping 7-0 and boast a top-10 unit on both sides of the ball, with their rampant defense often being the difference in those closer-fought contests.

Patrick Mahomes hasn’t been at his best this season, ranking 16th in both passing yards and touchdowns while also throwing 9 picks. He threw 14 in 2023 for context, which was a career-high. This does present an opportunity for Tampa Bay, who rank tied-2nd when it comes to interceptions forced on the road this season.

Speaking of the Bucs, their hot-start has cooled off in recent weeks with a pair of losses to the Ravens and Falcons stunting their growth. The Chiefs will present a very different challenge and a defense who will capitalize on even the tiniest of mistakes…but Tampa Bay is 2-1 on the road this season and will look to make a statement in order to get their season back on the right track.

There are playmakers on both sides of the ball for each team here. Mike Evans has been rolling back the years for the Bucs, but he’s out this week. TB had to try and live without both of their top targets last week, and it’s likely they’ll be in a similar situation on Monday night.

Meanwhile, Travis Kelce has started to do the same over the last month but he is fully healthy, posting 70+ yards in 3 of his last 4 matchups.

Since 2020, the Chiefs are 2-1 against the Buccaneers, but TB has won each of the previous 5 matchups before that season. The wildcard here is obviously Patrick Mahomes who changed the trajectory of this franchise forever, but with his form being a little more sporadic, there is certainly a window of opportunity for the travelling NFC outfit.

Why the Chiefs can win

The best team in the NFL, Kansas City walk into this game high on confidence. Tampa Bay’s offense will be missing some key cogs and that should in turn give the dominant KC defense enough of an advantage to keep them off the field and allow Andy Reid to dictate the tempo and let his guys do what they do best.

Why the Bucs can win

The Chiefs have struggled against opposing tight ends all year and Cade Otton has 181 yards across his last 2 games due to injuries at wide receiver. If Mayfield can exploit the one real weakness this defense has, it might just give them a chance against a team due for a game where their mistakes are truly punished.

It’s a large spread, and while the Bucs don’t have the firepower to win a shootout, I can definitely see them staying within that crucial 10-point number.

Buccaneers vs Chiefs: NFL Week 9 Betting pick

I like the Bucs against the spread here. You get a large cushion to work with because of the injuries, but those setbacks haven’t thwarted the offense as much as you’d think. They’ve still put up 56 points over the last 2 weeks, which is at least enough production to trouble the mistake-prone Chiefs and keep this matchup close.
