As I was making my way to the ride-share pickup area, I saw many passionate hockey fans, but something caught my eye. I saw a familiar name on the shirts of a few people: Jett Luchanko. While the Flyers selected Luchanko with their 13th overall pick, he was projected to go later, which made me believe these weren’t fans. Normally, I would never do what I did, but the journalist in me was in full effect after being as focused as I was on the draft.
A wholesome encounter with Jett Luchanko’s family
I approached the people with the Luchanko gear and asked if they were Jett’s family. They quickly replied with yes. I explained that I’m a journalist who covers the Philadelphia Flyers and was very happy for them. Luchanko’s grandmom smiled ear-to-ear and expressed her enthusiasm about her grandson being selected 13th overall, but she couldn’t believe it.
I told her, and the rest of his family, that Flyers General Manager Danny Briere said that Jett was his guy, and there was no doubt about selecting him when they did. This was the family’s first hearing what was said about Jett, and they just had a tremendous sense of pride. Jett’s mom told me that he has family near Philadelphia, and as a family, they’re happy about the familiarity.
This was a special moment as both experienced the draft differently. The Luchanko family was able to experience their beloved family members’ dreams come true. I was able to experience my first draft covering the team. However, we both were able to watch the growth of the Philadelphia Flyers.
What’s next for Jett Luchanko?
Jett Luchanko will likely return to Guelph for another rodeo in the OHL to further develop before making the jump to the NHL. Danny Brierre is all-in on the 17-year-old’s potential, especially after a 70+ point season in 2023-24.
“We feel he’s just he’s just starting to tap his potential,” Briere said. “He’s always one of the hardest workers on both sides of the ice. His vision, his hockey sense are high-end.
We could also get a chance to watch Luchanko turn on the ‘Jetts’ for Team Canada. He thrived in the IIHF Under-18 World Championships, winning a Gold Medal last May and providing a critical assist in that final game.
Jett’s family has plenty to look forward to over the coming months, as do fans of his new team, the Philadelphia Flyers.
