A Stellar season for Gazdag propelled him to be 1 of 8 MLS players called up to Euro 2024

MLS is not known as a league that produces many players to go on and play at the Euros. at Euro 2024 there are only eight players heading to Germany to feature in the tournament. They are:

Olivier GiroudLAFCFrance
Saba LobjanidzeAtlanta UnitedGeorgia

Gazdag is the only player from Philly to feature at these Euros and he got his callup because of how well he has played so far in this 2024 season. 10 goals in 15 matches and his ability to be in the right place at the right time has really helped the Union stay afloat in a crazy close Eastern Conference.

Not only is Daniel Gazdag the top scorer for Philadelphia, but he is also right at the top of Philly’s attacking statistics: expected goals (8.85,) xG on target (10.9,) penalty goals (3,) non-PK xG (5.70, ) and shots on target (28). The Philly attack runs through Gazdag, whether or not he’s always involved in the match. With that being said, his role on this Hungary team at Euro 2024 is set in stone.

Gazdag and Hungary are projected to be a Darkhorse at Euro 2024

Hungary is looking to show that they are a Darkhorse that can win with the big boys in Europe. They will be looking to showcase that through their sit-and-hit in transition style of play. Head coach Marco Rossi has this team ready to shock Europe and the world. The expectations are high, which means we may not see much of Daniel Gazdag for Hungary in this tournament.

While Gazdag is a constant goal threat and fits well into Hungary‘s 3-4-3 formation, he is not at the top of the depth chart. In the last six Hungary matches Gazdag has only featured in one (the most recent friendly he played 45 minutes vs Israel.) Rossi has seen Gazdag as a super sub when called upon, but he is not been called upon much in the last two years. If Hungary plays well in their first few matches we could see some Gazdag minutes, but if the matches are close, then he may just be an unused sub.

Hungary’s Euro 2024 Schedule

Hungary has decent odds of making it to the knockout rounds. If/when they get there, they will be up for the real test of the tournament playing knockout football. Will we see Hungary use its dangerous transition style to hit teams where it hurts in a flash while progressing through the tougher rounds of Euro 2024? We’ll have to wait and see.

Before looking too far ahead, Hungary will need to play well in their group-stage matches. Switzerland hosts Germany, and Scotland awaits them in Group A play. Tune in to see if Gazdag and Hungary can make it through the group!
