Joel Embiid, Robert Covington return to practice for non-contact drills

Sunday brought stellar news for Sixers fans as Joel Embiid and Robert Covington both participated in the team’s practice, according to head coach Nick Nurse, who informed the media post-practice. This comes one day after Nurse said that the team was “happy with the progress” of Embiid.”

Embiid underwent meniscus surgery on Feb. 6 and reportedly had a timeline of four to eight weeks to return to game action. So far, the Sixers’ star is just under six weeks into his recovery. Nurse stated that both Sixers contributed only in some non-contact drills and also mentioned Embiid’s continued work in the weight room.

While it may only be “non-contact” for now, this update is certainly a positive development for a team that has gone 11-22 without their franchise player this season. Despite this update, Embiid remains without a timetable to return. However, the reported hope is that he will be back by the final week of the regular season to ramp up ahead of the playoffs.

Embiid isn’t the only Sixer hopeful to return

As for Covington, the prodigal process son has dealt with a leg injury for most of the season, which has kept him off the court for Philadelphia. According to Sixers Wire’s Ky Carlin, Covington was seen shooting around after practice, working diligently as he hopes to return to action.

Despite the limited action he’s seen this season, a healthy Covington could be a key contributor for the Sixers as they look to make a postseason run.
