With free agency just around the corner, the Philadelphia Eagles made a minor roster move on Thursday afternoon, bringing back TE Albert Okwuegbunam on a one-year contract.
Eagles bring back TE Albert Okwuegbunam
The Eagles signed ‘Albert O‘ at the end of last offseason following a preseason finale for the Broncos where he racked up 109 yards on 7 catches. This was enough for Howie Roseman to see some developmental upside. However, he barely featured on the Eagles in 2023-4, playing in just 22% of offensive snaps and just 5% on special teams.
This is especially confusing when you remember that Dallas Goedert missed 2 games and the Eagles have lacked a solid TE2 since the departure of Zach Ertz. Considering how much of their offense was built on run-blocking and RPO-based plays, you’d assume that Okwuegbunam would’ve carved out more of a role.
This deal is likely to be a veteran’s minimum, or close to it, so the upside is still there to get the most out of the 25-year-old TE who measures in at 6’5, 258 lbs. While he’s not going to be expected to play a big role in 2024, the Eagles at least have a tight end with 30 games and 7 starts worth of experience under his belt who could play in a pinch, or at least compete with younger, developmental guys this offseason.
Nothing like some late-evening housekeeping.
