The USMNT released its roster for the upcoming January Camp, and two Union youngsters made the squad! Jack McGlynn and Nathan Harriel both will be with the United States Men’s National team for their training camp during January!

The roster is entirely made up of MLS players, with only eight players having caps with the national team. The players will report to camp on January 8th; the players will have two full weeks of training before a friendly match against Slovenia on January 20th!

McGlynn and Harriel add to an all-MLS USMNT roster

Jack McGlynn and Nathan Harriel have earned these debuts with the senior national team. Both have balled out for the Union and also have played important roles on the US-U20 teams in the past few years. With the USMNT preparing for the Olympics this summer, they will need U-23 players they can trust to make up the majority of that roster. This January camp provides that opportunity.

Here’s a look at the full roster for the January camp.

GOALKEEPERS (3): Drake Callender (Inter Miami), Roman Celentano (FC Cincinnati), Patrick Schulte (Columbus Crew)

DEFENDERS (10): Nathan Harriel (Philadelphia Union), DeJuan Jones (New England Revolution), Shaq Moore (Nashville SC), Ian Murphy (FC Cincinnati), Jackson Ragen (Seattle Sounders), Miles Robinson (FC Cincinnati), James Sands (New York City FC), Nkosi Tafari (FC Dallas), John Tolkin (New York Red Bulls), Caleb Wiley (Atlanta United)

MIDFIELDERS (6): Joshua Atencio (Seattle Sounders), Aziel Jackson (St. Louis City), Jack McGlynn (Philadelphia Union), Aidan Morris (Columbus Crew), Timmy Tillman (LAFC), Sean Zawadzki (Columbus Crew)

FORWARDS (6): Esmir Bajraktarevic (New England Revolution), Cade Cowell (San Jose Earthquakes), Bernard Kamungo (FC Dallas), Diego Luna (Real Salt Lake), Duncan McGuire (Orlando City), Brian White (Vancouver Whitecaps)

The roster is full of bright, young players looking to make their mark, and is led by the eight players with national team experience; Miles Robinson has 27 caps and is the likely captain of this roster. He alongside Shaq Moore (17 caps), James Sands (13 caps), Cade Cowell (8 caps), DeJaun Jones (7 caps), Adian Morris (4 caps), John Tolkin (3 caps,) and Caleb Wiley (1 cap) will be looked to as the leaders of the team.

A chance to make an impression on the senior national team

For McGlynn and Harriel the chance to work with the senior coaching staff of the USMNT is paramount to their passion to be a part of the senior national team heading forward. The USMNT has brought in Union players before in January Camp but it has rarely led to those players being important for the national team.

Brenden Aaronson and Mark McKenzie have been the only two who have turned a January Camp into reoccurring callups; however, this will likely be the case for Paxten Aaronson shortly. Can Jack McGlynn and Nathan Harriel impress and add their names to future USMNT rosters?

The answer to that question is still up in the air. Both players are very skilled, but will those skill sets meet the needs of the senior USMNT? This camp will be the first step in determining that for Gregg Berhalter, as will likely further U-23 callups should they be included in Marko Mitrovic’s squad for the US Olympic Team.

This is a chance to make a lasting impression for two of the Union’s standout young players. Balling out in this camp could mean that McGlynn and Harriel play a vital role with US Soccer moving forward! Now we will just have to wait and see how things play out!
