Buccaneers vs. Falcons: on its face, this isn’t the sexiest matchup, but it will have monumental consequences in the NFC playoff race. The winner of this Week 14 matchup will gain control of South.
It all goes through Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where the Atlanta Falcons are 4-2 and riding a two-game winning streak, but Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers might have something to say about all that.
Following a deceptively exciting start to Week 14 with a New England Patriots upset in Pittsburgh, Sunday will feature several games that could ultimately decide the playoff race as the NFL heads toward Christmas and, eventually, the 2023 Postseason.

Mayfield Pitching in Peachtree
The plucky Buckys are 7-5 against the spread this season – potentially of the function of surprising the league with their level of competency.
As a dog on Sunday, they’ll need to put the ball in the hands of Mayfield against an Atlanta rush defense, allowing just 3.9 yards per carry and whom PFF has ranked as their most efficient unit in the NFL.
In a Week 7 loss to the Falcons at Raymond James, Mayfield threw the ball 42 times, but a costly interception was the difference. Considering the Falcons ran the ball 38 times, with Desmond Ridder finding moderate success through the air, Mayfield will need perfection and a little help from Mike Evans to escape Atlanta with a victory.
Cordarrelle Patterson needs a Coca-Cola.
Cordarrelle Patterson has been underwhelming in 2023, following an impressive eight touchdowns in the ’22 campaign, but his best game of the season came against the Bucs.
That’s not saying much, given ten carries for 56 yards isn’t anything to write home about, but his snap count has been slowly rising since that performance, including 31% last week against the New York Jets. He’s now out-snapped Tyler Allgeier three weeks in a row, so we could be on the precipice of a Patterson breakout.
So we will wait and see if the Falcons free Patterson from fantasy oblivion for this December showdown. With a birthday on St. Patricks’, he might be the Falcons’ good luck charm against their division rivals.
Prediction: Buccaneers +2.5 & U/40.5
