Lions vs Packers: week 4 quarterback analysis
This game could be one of the most interesting we’ve seen between these two franchises in recent memory. Green Bay has dominated this divisional rivalry in recent years and has won 24 of the last 28 home games against Detroit thanks largely to the dominance of one Aaron Rodgers. This is a different era now, but Jordan Love is picking up where the future Hall of Famer left off.
Love ranks 6th in QBR through 3 games having thrown 7 touchdowns and just 1 interception. While he wasn’t as sharp as he was against the Falcons in Green Bay’s most recent win, he pulled off some miraculous throws against a vaunted defense to grind out a big win. The future certainly seems bright in Green Bay with Jordan Love at the helm.
He wasn’t the only quarterback to come up big in week 3, however. Jared Goff guided his Lions to a win over Atlanta and this shouldn’t come as a surprise. There has been a complete culture change in Detroit and dating back to last year, they’ve won 10 of their last 13 games. Having a wideout as dominant as Amon-Ra St. Brown definitely helps, but the Lions are as hot as anyone right now, giving us a fiery matchup to look forward to on Thursday.
Lions vs Packers: Who has the edge?
With two exciting offenses set to duke it out, this comes down to defense and I think Green Bay has the edge here. With a roaring home crowd behind them, the Packers have all the ability in the world to knock Jared Goff off his perch.
However, Green Bay ranks 11th in opposing Yards per play while the Lions sit 6th. Both defenses have prolific pass rushers and a progressing secondary, which could put this game on the composure of the quarterback. Is Jared Goff going to get rocked by Rashaan Gary more than Jordan Love will against Aidan Hutchinson?
The run-game could well be a deciding factor and Detroit might just have the edge there. The injury to Aaron Jones was a significant blow and while A.J Dillon is a serviceable backup, he’s only averaging 2.7 yards per carry on 39 attempts. That isn’t good enough.
Meanwhile, the Lions have built a versatile backfield headlined by Jahmyr Gibbs who finally had his first big rushing game last week with 70 yards in the win against Atlanta. In a game where the teams stack up so well, a reliable rushing attack might be able to dictate the tempo and force Jordan Love to throw from behind without much run support.
Lions vs Packers betting pick
I like the Lions to cover the small number here. While I’m a big Jordan Love fan and hesitant to bet behind Jared Goff, the run-game should take some weight off his shoulders, and he has a dominant WR1 in Amon-Ra St. Brown. Love has a backup running back coming up against the 5th-ranked run defense who just so happened to silence Bijan Robinson in week 3.
