The Philadelphia Flyers visited the New Jersey Devils on Monday to begin their 2023 NHL Preseason. A silver lining was tough to uncover, but tonight features a substantially different lineup against a new opponent, the New York Islanders.

Samu TuomaalaWade AllisonBrendan FurryEmil Andrae, and Felix Sandstrom are a handful of Flyers on the ice tonight on Long Island, as they were on Monday in New Jersey.

“It’s an intense camp, and it’s a lot for a lot of those guys, but I like that they battle through it. Nobody quit. Yes, they looked tired; that’s obvious, but I think it’s great, especially for the young guys.”

Perhaps fatigue from a return to skating, conditioning, and scrimmaging affected the Flyers on Monday, turning in a flat performance. Yesterday, the team had the day off to rest. They must battle harder against the Islanders. It isn’t the result that matters in the preseason. What matters is how the lineup responds.

New York Islanders

Eating defeat, 4-2, against the New York Rangers last night, the Islanders host the Flyers at the UBS Arena. William Dufour and Arnaud Durandeau lit the lamp for the Islanders.

“There was moments in the rest of the game [where] we did some good things. There’s certainly moments in the rest of the game we have to improve on. [It’s] the first exhibition game; a couple of turnovers early cost us.”

Matt Martin has a role on the Islanders. He and Nicolas Deslauriers could provide a few sparks. The Islanders deploy a heavy team, which Ian Laperriere offers Deslauriers and Garnet Hathaway to combat. Martin brings a brand of physicality that stands out among the NHL, finishing fifth in the league with 295 hits last season.

“Just because I’m a veteran, like anyone else in that locker room, you’re trying to earn roster spots, earn ice time; you got to play accordingly.”

Here’s the tentative lineup for the New York Islanders:

Kuhlman-Horvat-Barzal
Liukas-Iskhakov-Wahlstrom
Timashov-Pinho-Holmstrom
Martin-Cizikas-Gauthier

Pelech-Dobson
Salo-LaDue
Cholowski-Mitchell

Cam Atkinson (lower body) did not return to the ice this morning. Cam York also did not skate after playing on Monday. Both injuries aren’t considered serious. Travis Konecny did return to the morning skate, however.

Adam Ginning will skate in his first 2023 Flyers Preseason tilt. He is a defensive defenseman who could anchor in 2023-2024, allowing an offensive defenseman opportunities to help produce points. Last season, he played in one game versus the Columbus Blue Jackets. Defensive pairings likely will not remain constant with management observing which skaters play best with whom. Ginning could play with Ronnie Attard, pending where Victor Mete and Andrae are in the lineup.

“Ronnie’s got great abilities; he’s a big body, skates well, good vision, great shot, but you’re a defender; you got to defend. He’s been great so far in camp.”

Here’s the tentative lineup for the Philadelphia Flyers:

Laughton-Cates-Tuomaala
