The Philadelphia Phillies are 5 games clear of the Miami Marlins and are one step closer to cementing their spot in the postseason. Can they keep the good times going against the Padres?

Pitching matchup

Taijuan Walker (14-5, 4.05 ERA) vs Rich Hill (7-13, 5.26 ERA)

Taijuan Walker has proved time and time again that his resurgence is more than just a flash in the pan. He’s been as consistent as you could ask for through the month of August, allowing just 8 runs through his last 3 appearances. Walker’s 14-5 record is the third-best in the entire league and in comparison to the Padres being 9-17 when Hill starts, this is a favorable spot.

Speaking of Rich Hill, life in San Diego hasn’t been too kind so far. After a deadline move from the Pirates, Hill has posted an ERA of 8.50 in 4 starts (5 games). He’s given up 6 homers and only struck out 13. Given how hot the Phils offense has been, the red flags should be flying here. The Phils have a great opportunity to capitalize on a flailing veteran.

Phillies vs Padres Betting preview

From a Phillies perspective, they rank 7th in batting average this year. The Phillies scored 42 runs and allowed 18 last week going into the Milwaukee series. They cooled off over the next few games while the Padres heated up, batting .290 in their last 3. However, the Padres still rank 22nd offensively.

For me, the OVER is the play here. The Phillies should get back on track against a pitcher who has been disappointing since moving to San Diego, and the Padres offense does seem to be showing some late signs of life. That should send this total into double figures.

From a prop perspective, Fernando Tatis Jr. has recorded a hit in 8 of his last 10 games and 13 in his last 15. He’s only homered once in that time, so I’d stay away from that market, however, he’s +200 to record 2+ hits on Monday night.

As for the Phils, Trea Turner has recorded hits in each of his last 12 games and is piping hot right now. 22 hits in his last 13 games is an astonishing feat considering how much he struggled earlier in the year. The best is still yet to come for Turner, who is -115 to score a run on Monday.
