NFC West Odds: We’re now just a few weeks away from the 2023 NFL season and the San Francisco 49ers are looking to become the first team to win the NFC West in back-to-back years since the Los Angeles Rams in 2018. Coming off of an NFC Championship loss to Philadelphia, the odds would seem to favor the Niners, but is it worth betting on San Fran to run it back in 2023?

NFC West Odds: The favorites

The San Francisco 49ers went into the offseason in a very strange spot. The addition of Christian McCaffrey during the heart of last season was a game-changer and helped negate the ever-spinning QB Carousel. It feels like the main question now still revolves around that never-ending saga. Is Brock Purdy really a viable QB1? What about Trey Lance? How does Sam Darnold fit into all of this? It’s a bizarre situation but the bottom line is that Shanahan’s system is so good and the defense so dominant, that you don’t need a world-beater QB to win the division.

The Niners have one of the easier schedules in Football so even with the questions at QB, they have enough talent and efficiency in that locker room to make up for them and likely push their way to another NFC West crown.

It won’t all be plain sailing, however. The Seahawks have one of the 10 easiest schedules in the league and have finally been broke out of their roster implosion phase with a strong foundation to build on. Geno Smith had a brilliant 2022 season, the rushing game has a new hero, and Tyler Lockett is as good as he ever was. However, the Niners have beaten the Seahawks in three consecutive matchups, and they’re likely going to have to win at least one of their two clashes in 2023 if they are to make a run at their first division title since 2020. The NFC West Odds suggest it could be a tall Mountain to climb, however.

NFC West Odds: What about the back markers?

The Los Angeles Rams are in a state of flux. Their ‘YOLO’ mentality has come back to bite them in the rear. With and ridiculous contracts of declining players to move, and a flurry of draft picks after having next to none for the last few years, the Rams are finally entering a new phase.

The once-beloved Sean McVay very almost called it quits this past offseason. He does return, however, and the Rams still have every chance of creating some offensive fireworks. The team was decimated by injuries last year, which while not an excuse for the entire season, should at least give fans the belief that lightning won’t strike twice…or at least do as much damage this time around.

They’ll be hoping to at least finish 3rd in their division this year and to do that, they need to unseat Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals. Jonathan Gannon is the team’s new Head Coach. We’re a Philadelphia site. You can guess how we feel about the direction of that team.

The Cards have made a conceited effort to push out some of the old faces and start a new era, but it’s a slow process. Hollywood Brown and Rondale Moore headline a fairly average receiving corps, while the defense needs a complete makeover. Oh, and Kyler Murray exists. Their NFC West Odds are long for a reason.

NFC West Odds: Who should you bet?

The San Francisco 49ers winning the NFC West feels like a strong bet. The Seahawks are likely going to be their closest competitors, but if you’re looking at hedging against a Geno Smith regression and a potential quarterback carousel in San Fran, then the Rams may actually provide some serious value.

The price is extremely high and while the team is far from being a legitimate playoff threat, there are enough reasons to back a bounceback. It might not be high enough to win the division, but that price is one of serious value if you’re looking for a longshot.
