The Women’s World Cup is already nearing its end. The Round of 16 is upon us and Sunday saw a shocking early exit from the defending champion USWNT, who were eliminated during a penalty shootout against Sweden. This means that we are now guaranteed to crown a new champion, but which team is the favorite in the betting markets?
England & Spain lead the charge in Women’s World Cup Odds
England
+225
Spain
+300
Japan
+500
France
+650
Sweden
+750
Netherlands
+1100
Not many people predicted that the USWNT would be eliminated in the round of 16. They were +200 favorites to win the whole thing after the opening game of the tournament, so their early exit does come as a huge surprise. In their wake, England and Spain look to be the leading candidates.
England faces Nigeria on Monday and is -700 to win that contest, whereas Spain dominated the Swiss in a 5-1 rout this past weekend. Spain will face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals, whereas England will face the winner of Colombia vs Jamaica – which is the easier matchup in theory.
France is a team to watch at +650, given that their next match comes against Morocco. A win there will see them take on Denmark or Australia in the quarter-finals, giving the French a viable path into the semi-finals.
As we have seen already this tournament, anything is possible. Sweeden’s upset over the USWNT means they’ll face Japan in the quarter-finals and they will be carrying a humongous wave of momentum with them. If you’re looking to bet on the underdogs to continue their Cinderella story, now might be a perfect time at +750.
