While many will still debate about where DeVonta Smith landed among the top wide receivers in the league, the Eagles don’t doubt in their mind about who he is. The former Alabama product had a true breakout season in his second yard with Philadelphia.
DeVonta Smith defied expectations in 2022
Although it did take time for the Eagles to divide the target share between A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, the young wideout still found a way to finish the season with 1,196 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns on 95 receptions.
The Slim Reaper/Skinny Batman found a way to be a big-time playmaker in a crowded offense. With players like A.J. Brown, Dallas Goedert, and Miles Sander, Smitty did more than his fair share when the ball was in his hands. He averaged 12.6 yards per reception and caught 70% of his targets. He also more than doubled his previous total of 220 yards after the catch with 490 yards after the catch in 2022.
Now while the debate about him being a top 10 wide receiver is still out there. I am going to put several things in perspective to help build the case for the Eagles WR. DeVonta Smith finished 9th in receptions, 8th in receiving yards, and 11th in yards after the catch. Based on that alone, you would think he’s a top-10 wide receiver.
He finished just behind Jaylen Waddle (1,356 yards) and just ahead of Terry McLaurin, Amon Ra St. Brown, Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, D.K. Metcalf, and Garrett Wilson. He finished ahead of all of those receivers in YAC as well with the exception of St. Brown.
What makes DeVonta Smith such a special receiver?
DeVonta SMith is a dynamic player that has no boundaries in his catch radius. His route-running ability is also in the upper echelon of wide receivers. His attention to detail in his routes and his focus on mastering his craft have helped catapult him into the top tier of WRs.
Even with A.J. Brown by his side, Smith is more than capable of holding his own amongst the best cornerbacks in the game. With another year under his belt, I expect Smith to continue to silence his critics.
I am predicting that he finishes the season with 87 receptions, 1,097 deciding yards, and 8 touchdowns. DeVonta Smith will have a masterful season with the Eagles and could be in line for a big extension after the season.
