Pitching matchup

Zack Wheeler (4-4, 4.33 ERA) vs Tyler Holton (0-0, 0 ERA)

The Phillies are finally beginning to click from a pitching perspective. Aaron Nola delivered one of his finer performances, dragging a potential no-hitter into the 7th inning, and now Zack Wheeler gets his shot at a dreary offense.

Wheeler has struggled at times in 2023, most recently against the Diamondbacks and Nationals where he gave up 11 combined runs in 9 innings. Sandwiched between those games was a shutout win over the Braves. Even a happy medium should see him find success against a Tigers offense that is really struggling right now.

Across from Wheeler will be Tyler Holton, who will be making his first major league start. He’s looked good in relief spots, posting a 2.32 ERA in 17 appearances and it will be intriguing to see how deep into this game he can go, especially if the Phils do find some momentum early.

Phillies vs Tigers Betting preview

Once again, this is a mismatch. The Tigers came into this series ranked 29th in batting average. That number is now 30th. Dead last. That doesn’t bode well considering the caliber of pitcher who will be starting against them. Detroit has only scored 12 runs in its last 8 games and rank 30th in the league in on base + slugging. This could be a bloodbath.

It’s safe to say that we’re backing the Phillies today. The offense is heating up and the pitching woes seem to be settling. This Tigers team just doesn’t have the quality to hang around with Philadelphia.

If you’re looking for a prop for this matchup, Zack Wheeler’s Runs allowed line is 1.5. He should be able to weather the storm and survive this Tigers lineup without surrendering anything too damaging and at even money, there is some value there. His strikeout line is 8.5 and you can back him to record 9+ at +125, but he’s only passed that total TWICE this season. The value lies with his runs allowed in this game.
