After showing some much-needed signs of life against the Washington Nationals, The Philadelphia Phillies return to Citizens Bank Park on Monday to host the Detroit Tigers. Can they finally begin moving in the right direction?

Pitching matchup

Aaron Nola (4-4, 4.70 ERA) vs Joey Wentz (1-5, 7.2811ERA)

Aaron Nola’s last two starts haven’t exactly been dominant, but in fairness, they did come against the Mets and Braves. He now faces a Tigers offense that ranks 28th in batting average and 27th in runs per game. After giving up 9 runs in his last two starts, the Phils’ Ace will be looking to right the ship and build on their most recent win.

Across from Nola will be Joey Wentz, who has had a disappointing 2023 campaign. His last start saw him give up 7 hits and a run against the Rangers in just 4 innings of play. He’s allowed fewer than 6 hits only once in his last five games, and has allowed 5+ runs 5 times this season. If there is ever a pitcher for the Phils to bully into submission, it’s the 25-year-old lefty who is still without a quality start to his name.

Phillies vs Tigers Betting preview

There were finally some signs of life from the Phillies last week. The entire NL East appears to be slumping and the Phils are only 8 games back from the Braves at this point. There’s a lot of baseball left to be played and a big series against the Tigers could kickstart a much-needed resurgence.

The Tigers are 11-17 as a road underdog this year and 12-18 on the road in general. The Phils will be at home for this series and it’s hard to really imagine Joey Wentz being able to limit the damage, especially when Aaron Nola is on the mound for the home team.

If you’re looking for an outright bet, betting on the Phillies moneyline might be the way to go.

Pitching prop bets could be a nice alternative. Aaron Nola has at least 5 strikeouts in each of his last 3 games and that’s with two really disappointing efforts. His line for today is 6.5, and I’d feel pretty confident taking Nola to record 7+ against an offense this dry.
