Pitching matchup

Zack Wheeler (3-2, 3.80 ERA) vs Alex Cobb (3-1, 1.70 ERA)

After last night’s shambolic opening stanza, the Phillies can come into tonight with more confidence in their starter. Zack Wheeler heads to the mound on the back of a 7-inning game against the Blue Jays where he gave up just one run and three hits.

For the Giants, it’s Alex Cobb, who is having himself an incredible season. He pitched 7 scoreless innings against Arizona in his most recent start. In fact, that’s the second scoreless game in a row he’s pitched and his third of the season. He’s pitched a whopping 47 innings thus far and only allowed 51 runs. The Phils may struggle to knock Cobb off his perch tonight.

Phillies vs Giants Betting preview

The ’over’ didn’t cash last night, but not by much. This kind of pitching matchup would lead us to pound the under, but it’s not that simple.

The Phillies offense has been exceptional as of late and there’s no need to get cute here. The Giants bullpen still ranks among the worst in all of Baseball and the Phils bullpen isn’t exactly excellent right now. There’s a good chance that while the starters can hold the fort, most of the offense comes at he very end of the game.

What may be worth a look are the strikeout totals for each pitcher. Cobb sits at 4.5 and Wheeler 6.5.

Wheeler has 7+ K’s in 50% of his appearances this year.
Cobb has 5+ K’s in 60% of his appearances this year.

Wheeler will be facing the team that drafted him a little over a decade ago and it’s not like the offense is putting up incredible numbers. I’d happily back both pitchers to throw more than their given strike total here as a pivot away from the game run total.
