This is an intriguing pitching matchup. The ballad of Bailey Falter has been one filled with rises and falls, but 2023 has not been kind to the fifth pitcher in Philly’s rotation.
According to MLB.Com, the Phillies will use an opener and it’s not hard to see why. The report cites that Falter has an 7.71 ERA in first innings this season. Whether or not this will change if the game is in motion when Falter is dropped in remains to be seen, but there is still some cause for concern.
As for Wood, he’s been called up following a rehab window with the Giants’ Triple-A affiliates. He only pitched one game, giving up 2 runs and 6 hits in 3.2 innings. It’s hardly the most inspiring stat-line in the world, but given that he was likely focusing more on technique and loosening up, we can’t put too much weight in it. It is, however, worth noting that he last pitched over a month ago.
In 2022, Wood gave up an average of 5.1 runs per game, as well as the most hits in his career dating back to his 2018 season with the Dodgers. If he can get back to his best, he’s a workable arm that should be stable enough for the Giants to lean on. If not, especially in this series, things could get messy.

I really think the pitching matchup is where the value lies in this game. Falter has really struggled this season and with Ranger Suarez returning soon, there’s no doubt his spot in the rotation could be in jeopardy if he can’t get going.
Sprinkle in a returning Alex Wood who could be less than 100% and a Giants bullpen that’s giving up a whopping 5.93 runs per game, and this spells trouble.
The Phillies offense has been exceptional as of late and there’s no need to get cute here. They rank 6th in batting average, 3rd in triples per game, and 7th in slugging percentage. The Phils could get 9 runs all by themselves if the right dominoes fall, and betting the OVER 8.5 RUNS feels like the smart play for Monday’s game.
