The Philadelphia Phillies have been battered by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the opening two games of this series, but perhaps this will be their third time lucky.

Pitching matchup

Gavin Stone (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs Aaron Nola (2-2) (4.46 ERA)

Aaron Nola was at his best last time out in what was a key win over the Astros, giving up just one run over 8 innings. He’ll need that same form if he is to stop what has been a red-hot Dodgers offense up to this point. Los Angeles has lit up Philadelphia for 26 combined runs over the course of this series and it’s Nola’s job to stop the bleeding.

As for Stone, he’ll be making his MLB debut. He’s the #4 overall prospect and comes into his first major league game sporting a 2.69 ERA at the minor league level, and a 4.74 ERA over 4 his six AAA starts this season. If there is ever a game for the Phils to find a lifeline, this is the one.

Dodgers vs Phillies Betting preview

Bryce Harper’s return to the Phillies didn’t exactly go to plan. He went 0-4 in his first game back, while the Phils offense recorded just two hits all game. It was a really disappointing display for the second game in a row, so there will be hopes of redemption against a rookie arm making his first start.

From a Dodgers standpoint, they’ll need some of that same firepower displayed in the opening two games. Aaron Nola possesses a 2-0 record against LA, with an ERA of 3.57 across 7 appearances. They might not find the same success as they did against a struggling Strahm and Taijuan Walker.

If you’re looking at prop bets, then Mookie could be the player to hone in on. Betts has 3 homers and 11 runs over his last 10 games, with 6 of those coming against Philadelphia. Aaron Nola might keep him quiet, but can the bullpen? Betts to record a home run is +475.

It may also be worth parlaying the number of strikeouts Aaron Nola can amass. His line is at 5.5 right now, with the odds being -145 to go over that number. The Dodgers are striking out 9 times per game on average, so there’s some value here if the offense calms down.

Dodgers vs Phillies betting picks

It’s hard not to love the OVER here. The Dodgers have not only scored 13 runs in both of their last two games, but they rank 4th in the MLB in runs per game this season. If we expect the Phils to keep pace a little easier against a rookie arm, then this should easily sail over the given total.
