The Philadelphia Phillies are still looking to recover from a shaky start to the 2023 season and last night’s series-opening loss did anything but inspire confidence. However, the Rockies are 6-14 and should give Philly a launchpad for offensive success if all goes well.

Pitching matchup

Aaron Nola (1-2, 5.91 ERA), Noah Davis (0-0 0.00ERA)

Aaron Nola’s start to 2023 matches what we’ve seen from Philadelphia overall – inconsistent. However, he really looked solid against the Reds, allowing only 3 runs in 6 innings en route to a 14-3 win. He got tagged for 7 hits against the Marlins and 9 against the Yankees. The good news is that Colorado ranks 24th in hits per game and is averaging 9 strikeouts per game. This is a prime bounce-back spot for Nola in front of the home crowd at Citizens Bank Park.

As for Davis, he’ll be making his second-ever major league start after striking out five batters in his MLB debut and almost spurring a comeback win against the Mariners in the process. He allowed 3 hits and 3 walks but didn’t allow a run. It will be interesting to see how he fares against one of the most prolific offenses in the entire league.

Betting preview

A shutout was not something many people expected to see in last night’s loss against Colorado…let alone one coming from the Rockies. The Phils offense was left scoreless and they cannot afford to be as sloppy this evening.

What is perhaps more noteworthy is that the Phillies still have a glaring lack of bullpen depth. The group has given up 20 runs and 7 homers already this season, the worst marks in the MLB. Colorado’s offense isn’t particularly explosive, but it still found a way to pull out a further 2 runs after slipping 3 past Matt Strahm.

The Rockies may have shut out Philadelphia in game 1, but they’re still giving up 6.15 runs per game and rank 25th in strikeouts. This could at least leave the doors open for Philly to burst through. If they do, look for Alec Bohm to lead the charge.

He’s been held without a hit in each of his last 3 appearances but has still recorded a hit in 14 of his 20 games so far. Brandon Marsh could be another option to look at. He recorded a pair of walks last night and was riding a 4-game hitting streak prior to that, with 8 hits in that span. Davis is still a young pitcher who hasn’t faced an offense of this caliber yet and it may not take long for the wheels to fall off if the hits start coming. This could be a great spot to look for some value on Philadelphia.

Speaking of value, Kyle Schwarber is a name worth noting this evening. He has 4 home runs this season but is only batting .200. He’s +215 to hit a home run tonight against a wobbly Rockies pitching scenario.

Phillies vs White Sox betting picks

Brandon Marsh to record a hit -220
Kyle Schwarber to hit a home run +215
Alec Bohm to record a hit: -235
Total: OVER 8.5: -105
