Phillies vs Reds: weather the storm, don’t bet on Reds
The Philadelphia Phillies are 4-8 and need to stop the bleeding. Zack Wheeler‘s most impressive start of 2023 netted the Phillies a series loss as the Miami Marlins muffled any hopes of a comeback in extra-innings.
Bryson Stott‘s fifth straight multi-hit game wasn’t enough, and the Phillies have lost three of their last four. Insult to injury, Wheeler ended his day one K short of paying for my monthly Verizon bill.
When it rains, it pours, so I’m done being cute and returning to what made my fortune: the weather radar. For those of you privy, the perfect weather for a baseball is 70F with 50% humidity. That’s how Rawlings stores your precious souvenirs.
Well, this evening in Cincinnati, it will be hot. 78F with a humidity index of 24% (although not as humid as we’d like) by the first pitch means the balls should fly off the bats. More on that in a bit because we’re starting with le pitching matchup.

Phillies vs Reds: Series Opener Pitching Matchup
Bailey Falter (0-1, 2.61 ERA) v. Nick Lodolo (1-0, 1.50 ERA)
When I attended the World Series last season, Philadelphia greeted me with a rain delay as we strolled into Citizens Bank Park for Game 3. Like any good Phillies fan with a couple of beers in their belly, we made our way over to LIVE! for some light blackjack (cut to 3 AM).
The point of my story is that when we arrived at Philadelphia’s premier casino, we were surprised to see Bailey Falter holding court at his private roulette table. Since then, I don’t mind rolling the dice on Falter.
Red or black – no matter. I’ll ride with Falter O/4.5 strikeouts at +104 odds on FanDuel Sportsbook against a Reds team ranked 17th in strikeouts for ’23.
Blink, and you’ll face Nick Lodolo again. Just one week ago, Lodolo scattered three hits and twelve strikeouts against the Phillies on their way to an exciting walk-off win thanks to Stott.
Like Falter, I love Lodolo, O/7.5 strikeouts at +108 odds following his most recent performance against the Phightins.
Phillies vs Reds: Prop of the Day
First of all, we’re throwing Stott to record a hit (-160) into almost anything we do. He is working on a 12-game hitting streak, and Stott has at least two hits in nine of them. Too early to call it historic, but doesn’t make you miss Jean Segura quite as much.
We also look to Trea Turner to record 2+ bases, which he’s achieved in all but four games since the start of his run in Philadelphia. Here’s what all this looks like:
|Bailey Falter – O/4.5 Strikeouts||+104|
|Nick Lodolo – O/7.5 Strikeouts||+108|
|Bryson Stott – To Record a Hit||-165|
|Trea Turner – To Record 2+ Total Bases||-125|
That’s all $10 to win $138.09, and frankly, my dear, I think I’ve put together crazier parlays than this.
Phillies vs Reds: Final Verdict
Back to the weather. I do believe we see a smattering of home runs today, and Alec Bohm still feels undervalued.
He’s gone deep twice over the last six days, and you can still get him at +750 to homer on FanDuel. As much as I love these wacky parlays, take a couple of your Phillies to hit a home run, and eventually you’ll start covering your bills.
