Phillies vs Rangers: What bets are you placing?

Opening Day looms for the Philadelphia Phillies, and I can taste the dust spraying upwards from my keyboard as I furiously tap away. What the hell is my FanDuel password? What’s my e-mail password?

Another year of Phillies baseball, and there’s more winnings to be had than ever. In PSN’s inaugural Phillies single-game betting preview of 2023, I’m reminiscent of a time when placing a wager involved asking your friend to ask his friend’s bookie if you could put a bet (then waiting weeks for your return).

Now it’s all (legally) at the tip of our fingers, and I’ve got a few winners I’d like to share, if you’ll bare with me.

So go Phils, Ring the Bell, etc. – It’s Opening Day, baby.

Phillies vs Rangers: Opening Day pitching matchup

GAME 1: Aaron Nola (0-0, 0.00 ERA) v. Jacob deGrom (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Although the Rangers are one of only three teams that Aaron Nola has never faced, his 9.0 SO/9 in March & April historically should be enough against a Rangers lineup that averaged almost nine strikeouts per game last season.

I like Nola (O/6.5 strikeouts, +112) and Jacob deGrom (O7.5 strikeouts, -150) to eclipse their strikeout O/U in this one. You’re looking at two very aggressive lineups and two pitchers that like to avoid contact.

Phillies vs Rangers: Prop of the Day

Unsurprisingly, Phillies hitters have yet to fare well against deGrom. Kyle Schwarber, JT Realmuto, Alec Bohm, and Nick Castellanos combine for a career .089 BA with 27 strikeouts across 56 at-bats (so not exactly a small sample size).

The Phillies’ newest addition, Trea Turner, has had the most success against the lefty, hitting .239, including a double and a home run, so let’s welcome the young man. Right now on FanDuel, you can get Turner to record 2x hits at +210 odds. That’s $10 to win $21 and a relatively low-stakes wager to ease us all into the ’23 campaign.

Phillies Daily Fantasy Pick of the Day

If you’re looking for some value, it’s Darick Hall. While he’s just as likely to go 0-for-4 as to hit a home run, he’s just $2,000 on FanDuel, and I suspect he’s just about the minimum wherever you play daily fantasy.

Hall’s faced deGrom twice with nothing to show for it, but his power alone should be intriguing and spare you a well-rounded lineup otherwise.

Phillies vs Rangers: Final verdict

I learned last season that betting on the long ball is the best way to make some money. Sprinkle $5 here and there on Schwarber, Hall, and Bohm to go long. If one hits, you’ve already made a profit, and there’s nothing more exciting in baseball than watching a ball leave the yard and knowing you were smart enough to predict it in the first place.
