Spain vs Germany

Of all the group fixtures in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, this might be the one that carries the most intrigue for fans. Two absolute titans of the game clashing this early in the competition is beyond exciting. Spain are at the top of their group, but Japan’s shock win over Germany means that this is now a must-win for the Germans if they are to keep qualification hopes alive.

Spain vs Germany betting preview

A 7-0 thrashing of Costa Rica by Spain certainly turned heads, but Germany struggling to get anything from their game against Japan did so for very different reasons. I’d expect some kind of ’back to reality’ game here, but Football is a funny old game.

Spain have suffered a few bumps and bruises since their World Cup win in 2010. A group stage exit in 2014 and a round-of-16 exit 4 years later summarize a disappointing era for La Roja, but this squad is rejuvenated and clearly firing on all cylinders.

A failure to win against this resurgent Spanish side could potentially see Germany facing a group stage exit for the second World Cup in a row.

This game promises to be a physical affair and one that sees Germany play a much scrappier game after struggling in the final third in their opener. As for Spain, they can really afford to let the game come to them knowing that at very worst, their emphatic win over Costa Rica will give them a huge advantage on goal difference if they split points with Germany, all but guaranteeing their place in the knockouts.

Spain will strain Germany offensively. They have enough quality and ways to hurt them in that the third to punish any minor mistakes in the midfield by a German side that really struggled to find the net in their opening game. 26 shots, 9 on target, 1 goal. It’s not good enough, but they don’t need to be told that again.

Spain vs Germany betting pick

The fact that both teams are priced at evens or better in this game says everything. On paper, this is Spain’s game to lose, but the Germans will be ravishingly hungry, knowing their qualification hopes may very well depend on this result. I’d back over 2.5 goals for some value at -135.
