Chiefs vs Raiders Game preview
The Chiefs are 3-1 and are really picking up steam as the season rolls on. They’ve amassed 468 rushing yards through the opening 4 games on the back of Clyde Edwards-Helaire and rookie Isiah Pacheco. They ripped the Bucs to shreds on the ground last week for a team-total 189 rushing yards, providing Patrick Mahomes with more than enough balance to orchestrate the offense freely.
As a result, Mahomes has tossed 11 touchdowns and 2 picks and has been surgical as a passer, keeping up the fierce reputation that the Chiefs offense has mustered. This doesn’t bode well for the Raiders, who have struggled to put up points consistently this year.
What few people expected was the leap that the Chiefs have taken defensively. They’re now arguably the league’s top rushing defense after somehow limiting the Bucs to 3 rushing yards in their win last week. Even Jonathan Taylor, the NFL’s new rushing darling, was held to 71 yards in their win over the Chiefs. All signs are pointing towards tough sledding for Josh Jacobs.
Jacobs had himself a career day last week but will likely struggle to find similar success against the Chiefs. If the Raiders are unable to keep the chains moving and the ball away from Patrick Mahomes, things could get out of hand quickly.
Derek Carr hasn’t had a terrible season so far, going 94/154 for 1,038 yards, 6 scores, and 4 interceptions. The offensive line has been a key component in keeping him upright and helping to establish some rushing success. However, this Chiefs defense, headlined by Nick Bolton, ranks 6th in pressure rate. The Raiders only put up 23 points combined in both games against the Chiefs last year and there’s not a huge amount of reason to suggest that this matchup will bring a different result.
Chiefs vs Raiders Betting pick
The Chiefs at -7 feels like a steal here. They’re arguably the best team in the NFL right now and have a defense that’s only getting stronger, giving Mahomes more of a cushion (not that he needs it). The Raiders scraped a win over the Broncos, but that’s worrying in itself. Denver appears to be headed for a chaotic roller coaster ride this season and the Raiders made winning look like a chore. I’m backing Mahomes, the league’s best rushing defense, and an impressive new rushing tandem to comfortably cover this spread.
