Last night, the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Boston Bruins in their first 2022 Preseason contest, 2-1.

The special team units contributed successfully; the penalty kill was 6/6, and the powerplay was 1/5. Two goaltenders battling for the 2G role behind Carter Hart split the victory; Felix Sandstrom saved 17/17 shots, and Troy Grosenick stopped 14/15. Wade Allison fought Connor Carrick, and Hayden Hodgson threw down with AJ Greer. Both of the Cates Brothers scored goals; Noah notched the powerplay goal, then Jackson scored the game-winner.

Less than twelve hours later, they’re back on the ice at the Flyers Training Center. It is the fourth day of training camp, including more scrimmages and conditioning.

Team 1 vs Team 3

Team 1 earned the victory, 3-1. Tyler Savard scored the only goal for Team 3, hopping on a loose puck following a blocked shot by Tye McSorley. Ivan Provorov trailed Savard to the net on the scoring play.

James van Riemsdyk and Morgan Frost worked well on the same line. Both had a goal for Team 1, facing the team with the most NHL defensemen in its lineup. In addition to that line, Nicolas Deslauriers continued to bang bodies into the board, jamming Kevin Connauton. Two days ago, Cam York was on the receiving end of a collision from Deslauriers:

“Every shift, he’s looking for something. Unfortunately, it was me the other day.”

Max Willman also scored on a penalty shot.

Team 2 vs Team 4

Team 2 earned the 2-1 victory following a shootout. Theo Rochette and Zayde Wisdom knotted the score, 1-1. Jackson Cates, picking up from where he left off last night versus the Boston Bruins, scored the game-winner:

The big news surrounds Carter Hart, Artem Anisimov, and Cam Atkinson. All three didn’t participate in their scrimmage. Officially, these players are listed day-to-day. Atkinson did practice after the scrimmage, and so did Joel Farabee; not cleared for contact.

John Tortorella

He is a coach of simplicity. While his methods are intense and complex, the overall expectations are simple. At the Flyers Training Center, Tortorella takes his place at center-ice, watching his players skate circles at the end of each session. He pointed out Justin Braun, citing his work ethic:

“There are not too many people in this building that tries as hard as him.”

In addition to Braun, one player putting his best effort forward is Wade Allison. He stepped up to Connor Carrick last night for a hit he didn’t appreciate on Antoine Roussel. Unfortunately, Allison received a ten-minute misconduct violation after challenging Carrick to the fight, but Tortorella didn’t mind the willingness to have a teammate’s back. He wants his team to take that hit during the regular season, acknowledging the pop from Carrick was clean. Tortorella “truly respects” what Allison did to defend Roussel.
