One day removed from being shut out against San Diego, the Phillies decided to deal a shutout of their own. Zack Wheeler helped lift the Phillies to a big-time 3-0 win over the Padres, meaning the winner of this afternoon’s game takes the series.
The Phillies registered five hits on Wednesday, punching in three runs. These all came against Blake Snell, who was slow as expected during his 2022 debut. A walk-fest of a first-inning opened the door for the Phillies to burst through and once they established the lead, the wheel was turned over to Zack, who did a great job keeping Manny Machado and Eric Hosmer quiet.
Kyle Gibson (3-1, 4.10 ERA) vs Yu Darvish (3-1, 4.62 ERA)
Gibson has been a real highlight for the Phillies this season, however things took a turn for the worst against the Dodgers. He started out strong but would end up surrendering six runs and eight hits in 3 innings. Not great. The Padres are largely being propped up by Machado and Hosmer, but another inconsistent day at the mound could prove to be problematic.
Darvish is 35-years-old now and has bounced back well after a wobbly start to the year. He’s typically pitched well against the Phillies, holding a .231 ERA through five starts against them and 41 strikeouts.
The 17-19 Phils are favored once again here and it’s largely down to the explosive offense they bring to the table in comparison to a Padres team that despite holding a 23-13 record, are struggling, like the Phils, to turn those hits into runs.
The Phillies do seem to have turned a corner in terms of their pitching capabilities for the time being, and backing the home team to take care of business here is my play for today.
